垂兽 / CREATURE ON BRANCH RIDGE

又称角兽，是中国古代建筑上垂脊上的兽件，是兽头形状，位于蹲兽之后，内有铁钉，作用是防止垂脊上的瓦件下滑，加固屋脊相交位置的结合部。宋《营造法式》规定：官式建筑的垂脊端部用垂兽。

Creature on branch ridge is used at the low end of a ridge which came down from the top. t has a nail inside in case the tiles slide. According to "The way to build" of Song dynasty, creature on branch ridge should be used for the official building.

脊兽 / RIDGE BEAST DECORATION

走兽也称为蹲兽，是宫殿建筑庑殿顶的垂脊上，歇山顶的戗脊上前端的瓦质或琉璃的脊兽。分仙人和走兽两部分，其数量和宫殿的等级相关，最高为11个，每一个兽都有自己的名字和作用。

Decoration pieces made of tiles or glaze used on the diagonal ridge of hip roof in the palace buildings or the front end of diagonal ridge for gable and hip roof. It is divided into two parts as mythological immortals and animals, and the quantity is correlated with the grade of the palace. The maximum of pieces is 11. Each decoration piece has its own name and function.

仙人

安装在庑殿、歇山等建筑的檐角脊端的装饰建筑构件。

龙

最喜欢四处眺望，常饰于屋檐上。

凤

比喻圣德之人。据《史记·日者列传》：“凤凰不与燕雀为群。”它是一种仁鸟，是祥端的象征，它的出现预兆天下太平，人们生活幸福美满。

狮子

在佛教中为护法王，是勇猛威严的象征。《传灯录》记载：“……狮子吼云：‘天上天下，唯我独尊’。狮子作吼，群兽慑伏。”

天马/海马

前者追风逐日，凌空照地，后者入海入渊，逢凶化吉，在我国古代神话中都是忠勇之兽。

狎鱼

是海中异兽，传说是兴云作雨，灭火防灾的神。

狻猊

形状像狮子，古书记载是与狮子同类的猛兽，它头披长长的鬃毛，因此又名“披头”，凶猛残暴，吃虎，也有说为龙的九子之一。

獬豸

我国古代传说中的猛兽，与狮子同类。《异物志》中说“东北荒中有兽，名獬豸 ”。一角，性忠，见人斗则触不直者，闻人论则咋不正者，它能辨曲直，又有神羊之称它是勇猛，公正的象征。

斗牛

传说中是一种虬螭，据《宸垣识略》载：“西内海子中有斗牛，即虬螭之类，遇阴雨作云雾，常蜿蜒道路旁及金鳌玉栋坊之上。”它是一种除祸灭灾的吉祥镇物。

行什

造型像只猴子，但背有双翼，手持金刚杵有降魔功效，又因其形状很像传说中的雷公或雷震子，放在屋顶，是为了防雷。

勾头 / EAVE TILES

勾头也就是”瓦当“。瓦当是元代以前的称呼，到了明清时期称为”勾头“。勾头端部表面的纹样内容非常丰富。

Gou tou is called "Wa dang". It was called "Gou tou" before the Yuan Dynasty. It was called "Gou tou" during the Ming and Qing Dynasties。

滴水 / DRIP TILE

滴水瓦，一种中式的瓦，可以保护墙壁的洁净。一端带着下垂的边儿，底瓦于檐口处，其下端又下垂之圆尖形瓦片，盖房顶时放在檐口，在烧制之前，会被绘上植物或者花卉的线条。
